Proper nowadays artists - day 341: Michaël Borremans (Belgium)

Michaël Borremans (Belgium, 1963)

An artist about whose paintings you hear some Mick Wilson levels of bullshit. For some reason for the cultural gatekeepers he’s not a reactionary or a pseud or whatever else, like most of the nowadays proper painters are for them. Somehow his paintings must give them those just-discovered-you-lost-your-wallet or just-stepped-in-a-puddle-and-now-your-feet-are-soaked feelings that you get when you walk into a modern art gallery. The rest of us though can enjoy his quality painting and drawing with its clear nods to the past. Personally one of the most inspiring things about him is how he gave up a teaching career to try to make it as a painter and succeeded.
