Proper nowadays artists - day 83: Mattias Snygg
Mattias Snygg (Sweden)
There are a few dismissive reactions to good (as opposed to bad) figurative art that you hear from professionals in the art world which are a very good sign the person is either an idiot or an ideologue, or very likely both. One is calling the figurative work “photographic”. Another is calling it “Classical” or some variant thereof. Another is along the lines of it’s “been done before”. Another is that it is “ just technical”. More on those 4 at a later date, but the other one you get is that it’s “just illustration”. You can pretty safely discount almost any art professional who’s reacted with one of these moronicisms when faced with skilful, figurative art based on a form.
Anyway, on to Snygg; a perfect example of illustration as proper art (if you’re really determined to divide the 2 from one another) or proper art that illustrates something. Some of his work veers more into one area than the other and vice versa.
